Autonomous Mobility Systems with Autonomous Shuttles
Driverless shuttles for a sustainable, future-proof solution to today’s mobility challenges
Mobility is changing and with it the entire industry and its players. Whether transport operators, manufacturers or suppliers, the transport sector faces numerous and fundamental challenges. One of the most pressing is the urgent need to reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions to mitigate the effect of climate change. Other challenges also exist such as overcrowded city centres where traffic jams regularly occur, and more and more vehicles occupy public spaces that could otherwise be used for social good. Add to these are the inadequate services connecting suburbs and rural areas to urban centres.
With its holistic autonomous transport system, or ATS for short, ZF offers a sustainable, future-proof and effective solution to today’s mobility challenges. At the heart of the ATS are ZF’s autonomous driverless shuttles equipped with state-of-the-art AD systems, such as environmental sensors, central computers equipped with artificial intelligence and AD functions such as the so-called "Virtual Driver". The shuttles also have emission-free e-drive, mechatronic Level 4 actuators with redundancy levels, and active safety systems. Data transmission, together with validation and assurance strategies, guarantee high safety and quality standards.
ZF's shuttles can already reach speeds of up 40 kilometres per hour – the average speed in large German cities – transport up to 22 people and be integrated into the normal flow of urban traffic. One of the biggest advantages of this automated system is that it connects rural areas to the city centres without adding to the emissions or congestion.
With its autonomous shuttles and demand-driven routes, ZF is revolutionising the public transport.
